San Diego, est. 2026

Tanks, trims,
and a good pour.

A cars-and-coffee morning for aquascapers, hosted right in the showroom. Come see the tanks, trade trimmings, and nerd out over hardscape with the rest of San Diego's fishkeeping crowd — coffee's on us.

The concept

Same energy as cars & coffee. Just swap the horsepower for hardscape.

Cars-and-coffee meetups work because nobody has to trailer their car anywhere — you just show up. Fish & Coffee borrows that same idea for aquascaping: instead of everyone hauling glass, soil, and livestock across town, the showroom's own floor tanks and Hakkai builds do the showing off. You bring the parts that travel easily — plant trims, dry hardscape, a spare piece of gear — and a cup of coffee gives everyone a reason to actually stand around and talk instead of just scrolling past each other's tank shots online.

See the showroom
Walk the floor tanks and Hakkai builds up close, ask the team how they're run, and get ideas for your own setup at home.
Trade trims & coffee
Bring plant cuttings, dry goods, or DIY hardscape to swap — easy to carry in, no glass or livestock required. Coffee's courtesy of a different neighboring Convoy restaurant each meetup.
Talk shop
Trim techniques, CO2 setups, stocking questions, gear swaps — an easygoing morning for every skill level, no sign-up required.

How it works

Four steps, zero pressure.

01
Show up
No RSVP required, no ticket to print. Roll up to Pet Zone on Convoy St whenever the next date's posted and walk in.
02
Grab a coffee
Coffee's provided free for the morning — pour one, find a spot near the tanks, and settle in.
03
Browse & trade
Walk the showroom's floor tanks and Hakkai builds. If you brought trims, dry hardscape, or gear to swap, this is when it happens.
04
Talk shop
Ask questions, compare notes, meet the rest of San Diego's aquascaping crowd. Stay ten minutes or the whole morning.

Hosted by

Roger Ma

Roger runs Pet Zone Tropical Fish on Convoy St and started Fish & Coffee to give San Diego's aquascaping community a regular, no-pressure place to gather — the same way car people already had cars-and-coffee. He's also behind the shop's Hakkai nature-aquarium builds, which anchor the showroom you'll walk through at every meetup.

Questions

Good to know before you come

When is the next Fish & Coffee meetup?

The date isn't set yet. Sign up below and you'll get one short email with the date and location as soon as it's confirmed.

Do I need to bring a tank?

No — please don't. The showroom's floor tanks and Hakkai builds are the display for the morning. If you want to bring something, plant trims, dry hardscape, or spare gear are easy to carry and easy to trade.

Is there a cost to attend?

It's free. Coffee is provided, courtesy of a neighboring Convoy restaurant. The coffee partner changes from meetup to meetup, and we'll name them in each event announcement.

Do I need to RSVP?

Not required, but signing up below means you'll get an email with the exact date and location as soon as it's set, plus that month's theme if there is one.

Is this beginner-friendly?

Yes. It's built for every skill level — first-time tank owners are just as welcome as people running full CO2 setups. Nobody's grading your aquascape.

Where exactly is it?

Pet Zone Tropical Fish, 4160 Convoy St, San Diego, CA 92111 (get directions) — the same shop that hosts the Hakkai nature-aquarium builds you'll see in the showroom.

Don't miss the next one.

One short email before each meetup — date, location, and that month's theme. No spam, no fish oil ads.
